North Metro Septic

Advanced & engineered septic system cost in North Atlanta (2026)

When the soil, water table or a regulation rules out a conventional tank-and-trench system, the county will require an engineered alternative. They cost more to install and some cost more to run — here's the honest picture.

CONVENTIONAL ATU — AEROBIC TREATMENT UNIT full-size drain field ~30% nitrogen removed air pump smaller field 65%+ nitrogen removed
The nitrogen difference is what the grant money is paying for.

| System | Typical installed cost | Ongoing | |---|---|---| | Aerobic treatment unit (ATU) | $10,000–$20,000 | maintenance contract + air pump every 5–10 yrs | | Mound / raised fill | $12,000–$25,000 | same as conventional | | Drip irrigation dispersal | $12,000–$25,000 | filter and pump service | | Low-pressure dosing | $10,000–$18,000 | pump service | | Performance-based (engineered) | $15,000–$30,000+ | per design |

North Georgia specifics. Engineered systems run $12,000–$25,000+ when clay fails the perc test (mound, ATU, drip) here, and in Piedmont clay they're frequently what the county approves for a replacement because the original conventional field design is no longer compliant for the soil. No grant program offsets this in Georgia; the money is in avoiding it with maintenance, or in connecting to sewer where a main is within reach — see sewer coming to my street.

When you're required to go advanced: the county site evaluation says so. It is not a contractor upsell — the sanitarian's finding controls what can be permitted. If a contractor proposes an advanced system before the county has evaluated the site, ask why.
